Case Studies

These product design case studies cover real projects, from the first problem to the finished design. In particular, each one shows the thinking behind the drawings: what the client needed, what made it difficult, and how the design solved it.

C Channel Tabletop Support

A hidden steel C channel that keeps a solid timber tabletop flat and rigid.

Welded Steel Table Leg

A fabricated table leg in box section and plate, with full fabrication drawings for repeatable batches.

Flat Pack Ryobi Tool Holder

A wall mounted tool holder designed to pack flat, so it costs less to post.

What these product design case studies show

Each case study follows the same structure, so you can see how I approach a design from start to finish:

  • Project overview: what the project needed to achieve
  • The challenge: what made it difficult, and the thinking behind the approach
  • Design solution and considerations: what I designed, and the factors that shaped it
  • Engineering rationale: why the design works
  • Deliverables and outcome: the files produced and the end result

Together, they show the two sides of my work. On one side is product development, taking an idea and turning it into something that can be made at a sensible cost. On the other, there is CAD design and technical drawings, giving a manufacturer clear information to quote from and build to.

In every case, I do the 3D modelling in SolidWorks. Also, where a project involves a client, I only publish a product design case study with their permission.

In future, I’ll add more case studies as I complete new projects.
